Zoe, Andy, Janna and Emily. Maggie for a bit! Daniel, Rachel, Jonathan, Erica, Stuart, Rhys, Mathew, Ashley, Caitlin. We had invited a new artist to Splat, Emily Stracy, a ceramicist. She runs a lot of workshops with children and thought that it would be a great idea to do some collage ( sticking paper together to make another picture) work. Janna’s an old hand at Splat and so we let Emily get to meet some of the kids while Janna worked with them. Janna had brought some great examples on the theme of Woodlands. There were toadstools, spiders and creepy crawlies. They each had a great background made of soil and twigs, they looked fantastic. Caitlin came late but joined in well, she loved the clay and enjoyed sticking down the paper. Ashley had an original idea of his own, janna was very impressed that he designed his own forest with the techniques she showed us. Rhys and Mathew worked well together to make a great model. Mathew made a great spider and Rhys liked making some mushrooms. It was a great start to the morning and fantastic to see everyone so focussed. Stuart works very carefully and made a fantastic design which he painted carefully. Erica and Rachel are firm friends and enjoyed working together on the clay. Although we all got to thinking that Rachel more than making a design just liked making mud cakes. Daniel’s fairly new to the group but loved making the clay model. We worked together to make a great design which he loved painting. He was quite keen to take it home for his Dad. It was soon time for break. Emily had had some time to get to know that group and we were all looking forward to a new project. Emily works with animals a lot of the time and likes to think of animals representing a part of our personality. We all had to think of an animal we liked or thought that we were a little like. Caitlin enjoyed sticking down the paper, she worked hard all session. The kids seemed to love working with paper to create an image and there were some really quirky ideas. Jonathan has turned out to have some great artistic skills and worked hard to produce a great hedgehog. Emily was very impressed with both him and Rhys. Erica really liked the collage work and said it was even more fun than the clay. She liked working with the animals faces rather than the spiders! We were all really pleased with the session. Emily will be a great addition to out Splat artists. Janna and Chaz Dickie Andy, Nina and Zoe
We all very excited at the new addition to the Splat team. Chaz Dickie had been sent from the BSO to join us with to some percussion instruments. We thought it might be nice if he was able to sit and watch the first session. He said he’d had some experience with clay so it gave him a great chance to meet the Gang. Janna had brought some templates for us to work from, they were fish that we could use to make a clay tile with. It was great fun tracing the outline with the clay snakes that we rolled out. We soon had a fish shape in front of us. Erica made a castle and a birthday cake, Leon and Jerry worked well together, Jerry finished his fish very quickly. Leon was very good at the details that the fish needed. Milly and Lizzy came late but were very kind and carefully finished of my design. It was soon time for break and the children loved a chance to run in the garden. The adults preferred to watch the games from behind the doors so not to freeze to death! We then had to get ready for the music workshop. The kids were quite excited, there were boxes of instruments and it was as much as they could do to sit still and wait for Chaz to explain what to do! Chaz wanted us to learn how to keep beats going and build up tunes with different groups of children responsible for different beats. It was quite difficult but Chaz made it easier to do by giving us a theme. We had to imagine that we were at a train Station and all the noises began to build up to make the sound of a noisy station. It really began to sound very realistic. One group had to sing engine at one beat and another railway carriage at another point. Chaz helped us keep the rhythm by playing the harmonica at the same time. Once we had mastered this we had to get the instruments making the sounds too so that the noise began to build even further. It was a fantastic display and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Most of all we enjoyed the opportunity to play with musical instrument that we don’t normally get to see! Chaz had one very special treat for us, he’d brought in his cello. It was fascinating and I had trouble convincing Jonathan that he really shouldn’t play it as he hadn’t had many lessons! The kids were mesmerised by it and I think that they all enjoyed the tunes he played! Caitlin; Elise; Cameron; Gerry; Leon; Mathew; Erica; Ashley and Stuart.
We had some grand plans and with the help of Nick, Tiago and Sally Bradborn (a ceramist, see ‘meet the team’ page), it was a splendid day! We had some goodies for the kids, egg cups and chocolate eggs. Nick and Tiago had some great plans. Nick wanted us to go out into the garden and read and act. We had two stories Dirty Beasts & (half of) The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. We had some warm ups to get us ready for the acting. Everyone was pleased that there was sun and of course the Russell Cotes Garden is a beautiful place to work in. Gerry and Leon spent some time running around they loved the space! The girls were captured by Nick’s story telling and watched him like a hawk for the next instruction. We saw Tiago seek off and weren’t quite sure where he had gone…..but soon we’d forgotten as the story reached its climax! It was a great ending with the kids loving the dramatics that Nick injected the story with! With that Tiago appeared just in time for the end dramatics. He had a surprise, ‘follow me!’ Tiago shouted. Sally's card making Ashley did really well, Mathew did a card for his Mum. The Daffodils were a great success. It was soon time to go home but we hadsome helpers turn up to make sure we had finished all the work! Does anyone recognise this face.......! It was a great day out and we all loved visiting the gallery. Can we come again!
Claire Hincks and Emily Stracey. Jerry , Leon , Mathew, Cameron, Ashley, Jonathan, Erica, Catlin, Ryhs
We had a great day planned. Emily had brought in the beach huts project that was so popular with the away day. They are brilliant to make and look lovely on the splat display at the centre. We started off with the children working on the beach huts with Emily.
You had to take wooden sticks and stick them on the front of the cardboard hut. It was quite fiddly but its nice getting a bit gluey. The huts soon took shape and the children seemed keen to get their huts finished. It made us think about the summer and what we liked doing in the sun at the beach and, of course, the lovely Splat garden!
Once we had stuck enough sticks on we had to paint our hut to make it look similar to the ones on Bournemouth beach. Mathew really worked hard to finish his beach hut and leon concentrated on getting a smart finish. Ashley said that it was his favourite project so far, his hut reflected his hard work, Well done! Cameron always works hard and we’re always surprised by his fantastic imagination. Catlin and Erica like working together and roped Zoe in for some adult help. They made a great team! It was soon time for break. Andy was a little concerned that the children had lost concentration towards the end of the first session. We all had a sit down and talked about Splat. We all agreed that the things we do we wouldn’t get to do normally. We all talked about what we would do if we weren’t there. It wouldn’t be as much fun without the artist who bring us new and exciting projects. With these reflections we had some squash and had a run around with the football! Jerry and Leon were very useful at leading the game. Well done boys! Claire had brought felt for us to experiment with, she’d done an experimental piece for us to look at that had a sea theme. This way we could make some thing to fit in with out sea theme! We all had a go at making a three layer felt bed. It needed to be three layers of felt thick so that the fibres matted together. It was then time to design a nice panel.
Cameron worked quickly to help design a great colourful panel with blues in. Ashley found it hard to concentrate but settled into the project well and eventually helped produced a great panel. Jonathan worked hard and enjoyed getting soapy and working with the bright colours. Erica felt more confident in the second session and was able to work on her own to help produce the wonderful panels!
We all managed to help to make two felt sea theme panels so that we could display them behind our beach display. It looked great!
Ashley, Mathew, Elise, Catlin, Erica, Cameron, jonathan, Leon and Jerry Its always quite an eventful journey from home to Blandford. I always touch base with the artists and make sure that there are no problems…. Today was quite a palrva…! Poor old Nick was still in bath with a poorly car and Sammy had been sent to the wrong place by some dodgy directions! So I was half an hour from potentially 12 children descending on the splat session with no artists and no plans……………. I work with children doing painting and drawing workshops. Whilst navigating the mindless shoppers on a Saturday I decided that the one thing that we miss at Splat is painting and drawing! What we needed was some posters for people thinking about coming to Splat! What was it like, what were the fun bits and why would you want to come! I broke my plan to a bemused Andy and Zoe, who think that all artists are barmy anyway and that this series of events was nothing out of the ordinary…! I think that they quite liked the idea really and they helped get the paints and paper ready for the kids! When the children walked through the door it was the calm organised event that they all expect awaiting them....
The kids loved drawing and a produced some great pictures for us. It gave us a real idea of what t hey love about Splat! The main things that we talked about were the time for laughing and play, friends and the artists that we have every Saturday!. We all agreed that it was great fun! It was soon time for a break and by that time Sammy had set up her piano. The kids always love music and were keen to start the music playing! Sammy had to keep a keen eye on her equipment. Otherwise I think that someone would have liked to take it home!
We all liked hearing the tune that Sammy played. Ashley wanted to play the piano him self, I think we might have a musician in the making! Mathew also wanted to have a go at playing the piano and made a great duo with Ashley! Catlin and Cameron were great at concentrating and working on the rythmn!
This is a great example of Splat team work! Well done, guys! You sounded great!
Artists - Nick, Tiago and Janna Catlin, Cameron, Daniel, Ashely, Erica and Rhys
Darrell Wakelam and Tiago Gambogi Andy, Zoe and Nina Mathew, Daniel, Erica, Ashley and Stuart Tiago started the session off with some fantastic story telling in the garden. We had to use things in the garden to start our imaginations off. From this we created stories about fiery falcons rising from the autumnal leaves, blue barrels being beads from a giant’s necklace and the play frame being a princess’s tower. With these fantastic stories decided and described there was much excitement! The children enjoyed running around the garden and chasing the leaves whipped up by the leaves and Tiago instigated a running game to let off some steam! Inside we had to use the story to create a dance. With different parts of our body’s we wrote one of the letters in the story, each coming up with a different way of making the letter from elbows to an enormous ‘O’ with our legs! It led to quite a funny series of movements that had us all running around! Tiago insisted that we were ready to put it to music and played some classical music. We tried to dance in time and although we took some time to get it right we were all pleased when we did! We thought it would be fun to try one final performance outside. It was great fun and Tiago set us up like it was a proper performance! Andy was our audience and I think he thought we were pretty fantastic! It was soon time for break and Darrell had some strange things packed away in the cupboard. Its always fun when we have a new person on the Splat team, Darrell makes exciting masks. We were all excited when we saw the model that Darrell had made. As he explained that it was going to be a dragon you could see all the different parts of the dragon’s head! It was great fun getting stuck in and the children were all keen to get the Pva all over the model and all over themselves as well! Andy and Ashley seemed to have a battle over who was getting the most glue over who! It was a close match but I think that Andy won in the end! Mathew and Daniel worked really hard on the model and were naturals at the weaving technique that was used to build up the facial structure! It soon started to take shape and with Darrell’s help looked very dragon like very quickly. There three parts to finish the head, the back of the head and the bottom jaw. The base layer was finished just in time for home time and will be dry for November for making and fixing the big teeth!! Andy, Zoe and Nina Nick and Jackie Ekers It was a very exciting morning, I’d arranged for Bath theatre to come and entertain us with some fun filled story telling and drama. I pulled up into the car park just as Nick and Jackie had arrived, Jackie stepped out of the car followed by a limping Nick! Oh no! Nick’s football passion had finally got the better of him and he had twisted his knee in a recent football match. He looked very sorry for himself and had two crutches to make walking easier. Fortunately, he enjoys Splat and said he wanted to be there even if he couldn’t play at break time! Jackie is new to splat but didn’t need any introducing and mucked in straight away with the kids. We had a Halloween theme and she’d decided that we all need to make a mask for our later activities. We all very excited, only one thing missing, the children! With minutes to go Jamie, Erica, Molly and Luke appeared! It was great to have some familiar faces and great to welcome some new ones. It was Luke’s first session, he soon settled to the mask making and seemed like a pro! It’s a shame when there are so few children, we going to have to send out some more invitations! We settled down to work, we had a choice of either a bat mask or a pumpkin mask. It was quite tricky cutting out the shapes, Luke was very quick and accurate at it. Jackie had brought along some sticky bits and pieces which all had a Halloween theme. Armed with some pritt stick we made some fantastic designs. Erica and Jamie loved making the patterns out of the shining sequins. Jamie was particularly neat and spent ages over her design. We’re just getting to know Molly who’s knew to the team. She finished her design early and was keen to start on the reading. She took a great liking to Jackie’s book that she’s brought along about a witch and her green cat! When we’d finished our designs we had a little dancing time with the Halloween music that Jackie had brought along. It was great fun but by far the best dancer was Molly who has a great sense of rhythm. We also settled down for a bit of acting and a little of the story with some drama from Jackie and Jamie. Jackie was the witches cat and Jamie the witch. As Nick read out the story the girls acted out the story line. It was very funny to watch! My favourite bit was where the cat was lying on the floor and the witch accidentally sat on him. Jamie sat on Jackie and I think the two of them didn’t stop laughing for the next five minutes! With break time looming it was important to have a run around! We all had a good game of ‘chase’ with Jamie and Luke proving to be very hard to catch! After break we decided to make use of the lovely weather and used the garden to inspire a Halloween story that we all had to contribute to. Jamie and Erica were great at getting into character! Jackie had mentioned that she had spent some time designing a Ghostbusters dance for us all to do! It was very amusing to see so many spooks in the Splat room wandering around! It wasn’t long before it was time for a nice relaxing story before the parents came. Luke summed up Splat for me perfectly, it was full of fun friendly people!
Claire Hincks and Darrell Wakelam Mathew, Rhys, Daniel, Molly, Luke and Erica.
The children like making things with clay and were pleased to see Claire arrive with a large bag ready for play! She’s spent the previous evening designing some lovely bird baths for the children to make.
It was soon time for a break. A quick run around, a chance for Luke to impress us with his speed! He’s very quick! By the time we had returned Darrell had placed our nearly finished dragon on the table. We now had to finish the head and the colouring off so that we had a colourful dragon to display in the Splat entrance. It looked very impressive even with our the colour. The first thing that need to be sorted were the teeth. Darrell showed us how to work with the card to create a tooth shape and then how to inset it into the dragon’s gums. We all had a go at being Dentist!
It was a great idea to cover the Dragon with tissue paper and PVA. It makes the outside of the dragon seem nice and shiny when its dry. It was Daniel’s idea to make the Dragon red. It was a fine idea and suited him just right! We have to find somewhere to put him now. Its going to be a great addition to the family centre display. Lets hope he doesn’t scare too many people, those are quite big teeth!
Nick and Janna
Its always a great day at Splat but extra special is the Xmas Party! It was a wonderful spread, the food looked amazing which was kindly supplied by the church. Janna and Nick came armed with exciting ideas, Janna had made us some Xmas decorations to paint and Nick had some fantastic tales to tell and pictures to show. He also helped out with the card making. There was a lovely Xmas prize draw which everyone seemed to love. What great presents and all kindly donated by local companies. It was hard work setting up and everyone was running about making sure that everything was perfect. Tony was there with Luke excited about seeing Santa. He said that he’s so pleased that Luke now feels happy at Splat and that he doesn’t even notice when dad goes! He’s impressed at the way that Splat has brought out his Arty Crafty side. He’s made some new friends and become more confident with his peers. Gradually there are more through the door and even some old faces. Ashley has made a return appearance! He say that he misses Splat and wishes he could come back but he’s too old now! There’s not many project that run on a Saturday! Brinley came and brought his family too. It was great to get some feedback from his Mum. She said that he seem more confident through coming here because no one judges him. Brinley was closely followed by Ryan. He was a popular member of Splat, keeping us all amused with his antics! He misses Splat and wanted to come back so much that he promised to better behaved at home if we let him back! We told him that he should be anyway! He’s got a great sense of humor and always makes us smile! He said that his favorite memory of Splat were the trips to the Russell Cotes Museum. He was especially sad to have lost the friends that he made through Splat!
Emily is a new face to Splat and she’d brought her Mum along to show her what we’ve been up to. Her Mum was keen to tell us she loved Splat and that baby bro James wants to come to because of what Emily says about it! Mum’s noticed that her Art has improved and that her confidence has grown with working with others. Well, I had a word with Maggie and she’s agreed to let James come too!
Jonathan and Rhys came along with their Mum. Jonathan was very sad as he’s not been able to come to Splat this year. He spends quite a lot of time with us already and we had to make sure that we give spaces to others. Jonathan’s very Arty and he said that he missed making things. Rhys said he liked looking at the DVD’s, it was like the history of Splat, he said!
Joel and his parents came; Dad says that Joel loves Splat and that he often asks when it is. Dad said it’s the only time he socializes with other children. Jamie’s new to splat and has become a very popular member, she’s a quiet worker. She said that she loves doing the Craft things and that it’s a fun way to spend Saturday. Her parents were pleased with the effect it was having on her confidence and that they often got showed how to make things from Splat sessions. She talked about how much she enjoyed making the Dragon at the last Splat session. Her parents are sure that she’s been happier because of it and wished that she could come more often.
Janna and Nick worked hard all session entertaining the children with various projects. Nick said that he loved coming to Splat and that the children make him laugh with their antics and good humor. He’s loved watching the DVD and hopes that we can make another as it captures the essence of Splat, lovely people and fun!
Claire enjoyed all of the projects and couldn’t make a decision which she enjoyed the most. She’s a great help at Splat and is always helpful. We were keen to thank her Dad for sending us such a helpful member, he said that he couldn’t manage without her, she’s very helpful at home too. 13 th January 2007
Stuart, Matthew, Alex, Toby, Ebony, Like, Jamie and James
We had a Rose Perry, painter, and Claire Hincks, ceramics, to help the children today. It was a Chinese themed session where we had planned to tell the children a little about Chinese New Year.
Claire had brought along stories of Chinese dragons and Rose was planning a session where we would all make Chinese lanterns. Claire had lots of resources for us to look at that she’d collected about dragons. We had stories and pictures to help us learn more about Chinese New Year.
Claire set about showing us how to make a dragon using specialist clay techniques. The children were all keen to develop characterful dragons from the picture’s Claire showed.
Stuart’s a very good model maker. He was well ahead and full of ideas about his dragon. James showed he had a great imagination and was great at the new skills.Jamie worked well on her own, she’s grown in confidence since coming to splat. Ebony is great at designing her dragon, we loved hearing her describe it. The dragons were being to look very colourful and the children enjoyed working with the clay. It was soon time for a break but before we stopped we decided to read one of the stories that Claire had brought along. It was about the dragons and a story about China and the myths that are part of their culture. It was a great tale of flying dragons and large mountains.
The children didn’t want to stop for a break and could of happily carried on with the clay work. Maggie bought out drinks and the healthy fruit and there were soon some distracted.
After the break the children had to clear up ready for the nest session, Chinese Lanterns.
Rose had brought in some colourful tissue paper. She showed us how to rip it into pieces and create a colourful pattern by over laying it. We then used PVA to glue it down.
When we were finished we speeded up the drying by using a hair dryer. It was lovely seeing the paper dry shiny and colourful, the PVA gives it a lovely shine. We then use some printing blocks to make even more patterns on the paper. Rose then showed us how to fold the paper in half and cut part way down to create the lantern. They looked fantastic! We finished them off with silver tape and a wire handle. The children were very excited about taking them home. It was great seeing the parents pick them up, quite a number agreed that they will make a lovely addition to house decorations! Claire and Rob Harris from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Jamie, Erica, Mathew, Stuart, Alex, Toby, Luke and Matthew.
We had a great day planned today due to a visit from the BSo. They’d sent along Rob Harris, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra horn player. He had some great ideas for making the children explore some music making with a huge box of instruments. Before we started that, though, Claire had made some great tiles for the children to decorate.
To keep with the musical theme she had designed some musical templates for the children to draw around. We made Rob tell us a little about what they all meant and how they’d sound. We learnt what a treble clef was and how to draw one! Its not as easy as you imagine! We also learnt about, quavers, semi quavers and crotchets.
Claire demonstrated some different techniques that we could use on the clay tiles. There was a cloured paste (slip) that we could use to paint on the tiles with. By using the musical templates we could paint over the top to create a sharp clear image on the tile face. It was very effective and once we’d tried the examples that Claire gave us we had a go at experimenting with a few our own designs. Toby had a great day and produced loads of work and was very focused. Alex worked very hard to produce lots of examples of different tile techniques. Jamie works very carefully and without either of us cheating had managed to produce a design just like mine! We were soon ready for some healthy snacks for break time. We were all keen to finish break so that we could move onto the muisical extravaganza! Rob plays the French Horn, he told us that using some familar objects he could help us make our own! How to make your own French horn! Watch very carefully!
Rob had a selection of things for us to experiment with and helped us understand crescendos and how to make different sorts on noise with each instrument. He played a great game with us where we had to guess what tune he was playing. It was a very funny session and we all enjoyed learning a new instrument! Gardening will never be the same.....!
10th March Claire Hincks, ceramics and Rob Harris, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra It was a lovely sunny day and the children were very excited to see Rob return with his musical instruments. He had bought along a big box for them to create musical masterpieces with. Claire had planned a fun session where the children would be able to model musical players out of clay. We were all pleased to see the fired tiles they looked great and we thought that they would make a great panel that we could display on the wall.
We soon settled to the new task of building our own musical characters. The children always like clay and Robs help with explaining what characters you’d find in the orchestra helped even more. Luke really enjoyed working with Rob and was very chatty keeping us entertained for the session. Zoe had a go at making this week and was very pleased with the results. Alex was especially good at designing the models; he’s developing quite a skill at ceramics. The models looked great when they were all grouped together! It was soon time for a break and a chance to run around in the garden seeing as the sun was out!
Today’s session just flew by and we were almost late for the parents!
